This grey Isuzu D-MAX has been set up for an owner who wants secure storage without giving up the versatility of an open tray.
Pairing our 1800mm aluminium tray with a compact 850mm canopy leaves a generous section of usable deck space at the rear. It is a practical combination for carrying tools and equipment during the week, with plenty of flexibility for camping gear, bulky loads or future accessories.
The 1800mm tray provides a strong, lightweight foundation for the build. Instead of enclosing the entire deck, the smaller canopy leaves approximately half of the tray available for equipment that does not need to be stored inside.
The exposed rear deck features a checker-plate floor for extra grip and durability. Shortened sideboards help secure the load area while allowing the canopy doors to open freely. Heavy-duty over-centre latches make the boards easy to release when unrestricted loading access is required.
Tray features include:
The 850mm canopy gives the owner a dedicated space for equipment that needs to remain secure and protected from the weather. Gullwing doors provide convenient access from both sides, supported by gas struts for simple loading and unloading.
Inside, the canopy has been intentionally left open. The flush floor and internal mounting channels create a flexible starting point for shelves, drawers, electrical equipment or a touring fit-out later on.
By choosing a compact canopy rather than a full-length unit, the owner retains separation between enclosed storage and the open load area. Clean gear can stay inside, while larger, dirtier or awkwardly shaped items can be carried behind it.
The tray makes productive use of space underneath as well. Lockable underbody toolboxes provide quick access to smaller equipment without taking up room inside the canopy.
A full-length trundle drawer runs beneath the rear deck, offering storage for long tools, recovery gear or other items that are difficult to accommodate in a standard toolbox. Its gas-assisted lid opens from above, making the contents easier to organise and reach.
This setup is all about preserving options. The canopy provides secure everyday storage, while the shortened sides and open rear deck keep the D-MAX useful for larger loads.
Finished in black powder coat against the grey bodywork, the tray and canopy create a clean, purposeful look without overcomplicating the vehicle.
For owners who do not need a full-length canopy but want more protection than a tray alone, this 1800mm tray and 850mm canopy combination offers a smart middle ground.
